Mobile card machines for UK businesses
If you take payments away from a counter, at tables, at the door or on the road, a mobile card machine lets you get paid wherever the customer is.
Portable vs mobile: what's the difference?
A portable card machine connects over Wi-Fi, so it works anywhere within range of your router, such as around a restaurant or salon. A mobile card machine has a SIM card and connects over 4G, so it works anywhere with mobile signal: at a customer's home, a market or an event. Many modern terminals do both, using Wi-Fi when it's available and 4G when it isn't.
Who needs one?
- Restaurants and cafés taking payment at the table.
- Takeaways taking payment on delivery or collection.
- Tradespeople getting paid on the job, before they leave.
- Salons and barbers taking payment at the chair.
- Market traders and events where there's no fixed counter.
What to check before you choose
- Connectivity: does it include a 4G SIM, and does it fall back to Wi-Fi automatically?
- Battery: will it last a full shift, and does it come with a charging dock?
- Receipts: does it print a paper receipt, or only send one by text or email?
- Payments accepted: contactless, chip and PIN, Apple Pay and Google Pay as standard.
- Fees: check the rate, per-transaction fee, monthly rental and any SIM or data charges.
Our mobile card machine
The PAX A920 Pro is a portable Android card machine with a built-in 4G SIM, automatic Wi-Fi fallback, a built-in receipt printer and a charging dock. It takes contactless, chip and PIN, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
If your customers always pay at a fixed counter, a countertop terminal like the PAX A35 may suit you better.
